Bay Area Boxer Robert Guerrero Prepares for Historic Prime Time Fight
Aromas, CA
February 18, 2015
Bay Area media outlets gathered to watch local boxer Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero prepare for his upcoming welterweight match against Keith “One Time” Thurman on Saturday March 7th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. The highly anticipated fight will be historic – it will be the first time in 30 years that boxing is televised on Prime Time Network Television, as the inaugural Premier Boxing Champions on NBC.
While Thurman may be undefeated (24-0 with 21 KOs), he has his work cut out for him with Guerrero. The former four-division world champion not only holds an impressive record (32-2-1 with 18 KOs), but has also stood toe-to-toe in the ring with Floyd “Money” Mayweather. His 2014 win over Yoshihiri Kamegai has been hailed as one of the most exciting fights of the year.
But it’s not just his impressive career that makes him a fan favorite, it’s his inspirational story and Bay Area roots that make us proud to call him one of our own.
Born and raised in Gilroy, CA to a close Mexican-American family, Robert has been boxing since age 9, trained by his father, Ruben Sr, who still trains him to this day. When talking to Ruben about Robert’s upcoming fight, you could feel the excitement and pride in his voice, vowing that he could take on any opponent as well!

Happily married to his lovely wife Casey, Robert has two beautiful children, a daughter Savannah and a son, Robert Jr, who was seen monkeying around the gym on media day. While most of the questions focused on the upcoming fight, the topics turned personal during a few touching moments.
Robert’s wife Casey is a cancer survivor, and thankfully has been 5 years cancer free. When asked about her health, Robert said she is doing great, and gushed about his wife.
“She is the real fighter in the family,” Robert said. “What I do in the ring is nothing compared to what she had to fight through.”
When asked what his pre-fight ritual is, he said he likes to keep things calm and quiet.
“I say a prayer and keep it quiet and calm. I don’t like any clapping or excitement, because when you’re ready, you’re ready.”
And boy does he look ready. Switching from smiles and jokes, to a fierce fighter’s stare with his dad proudly looking on, Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero packed a powerful punch, and is so fast it’s dizzying. We can’t wait to see one of our very own represent the Bay Area in the ring.
