In response to racism, 'sanctuary restaurants' now provide a safe place to dine"

President Elect Donald Trump promised to build a huge wall so that he can keep all the Mexicans out. He also said that the Mexico would pay for the wall. He seems to be back tracking on his statement now that he's been elected but promises to still deport the "bad ones" (whatever that means).

He may have not known the repercussions of his statements as almost 400 racial attacks followed the US presidential elections. It is very difficult for people who don’t fit the description of white American to not get harassed every day. One of the places they get treated unfairly is restaurants. It doesn’t matter if they work there or go to find a decent meal, they are targeted.

Keeping this in mind, a press release was put forward for the public by a collaboration of ROC United, Presente.org and COLORS restaurant through Tim Rusch. They have called it the sanctuary restaurant movements, in which many restaurants are joining in. the current restaurants under this movement, are 24.

The basic tag line for the movement is that these restaurants have a table for you to sit and eat irrespective of the color of your skin or dialect of your English. They claim that there is a zero tolerance policy for racism and hate in their restaurants. According to the reports, there will be a sign board on all the signing restaurants that says “sanctuary restaurant: a place at the table for everyone”.

Racist White People Insults The Mexican Worker!!

Many of the 400 incidents of hate and racism happened with the boundaries of the restaurants where either the guest or a worker was harassed. It is a known fact that the restaurant industry will face a major problem if undocumented refugees are lifted from their restaurants. The small jobs in the day or odd hours, like porter or dish washer, as passed over the general American public. Therefore, the industry is highly dependent upon these willing workers.

However, these restaurants cannot provide legal cover to their workers but have vowed to give them space to express their selves. This includes the workers and the people who are non-white and come to eat in these sanctuary restaurants.

The salient features that have been agreed upon by these 24 restaurants include:

  • No harassment allowed against any person based on his race, ethnicity, religion or culture.
  • Put up a prominent sign which says “SANCTUARY RESTAURANTS: A Place At the Table for Everyone"
  • Exchange of information with the ROC United in order to be well informed.
  • Come together in order to share ideas of improving the system.
  • Start an outreach program for the refugees under threat or harassment.
