15 Young Latinas Will Have Their Quinceañeras At The State Capitol To Protest Anti-Immigrant Law
On Wednesday, July 19th, fifteen young Latinas will take their quinceañeras to the Texas state capitol.
'Quinceañeras at the Capitol' is an event organized by Jolt Texas to promote cultural pride and protest SB4, a new anti-immigrant law in Texas. The law not only bans "sanctuary cities" in Texas, it also makes it legal for law enforcement to stop any person and inquire about immigration status/require proof of legal status, and heavily fines any police or law enforcement agencies who do not do so.
"Quinceañeras are not just parties, they are celebrations that strengthen family ties and unifying the community, which is what we need to do to stop hateful, racist politics that hurt Latinos," Tania Mejia, Jolt Texas' communications director told Univision.
One of the quinceañeras and organizers of the event, Viridiana Sánchez, commented to Univision,
"We also want young Latinas to know that they have power. We want young women like us to know that they aren't alone, that they don't have to live in fear. We stand for them."
