With a trailer that teased Batman's appearance in Suicide Squad, many fans are wondering if the film will go even further in blurring the lines of good and evil by, get this, having Batman as the villain?! Yup, it's theory time, so grab your speculation hat as we dissect this rumour and how it might just work.

Hero Or Dangerous Vigilante?

Ok, so we've known for a while now that Ben Affleck's version of Batman will be EVEN DARKER than we've seen before. We know he's been at the hero game for a while now, he's grizzled and cynical and tired of getting nothing but resentment for his efforts.

He's also very concerned with everyday criminals and making the streets safer for ordinary citizens, which contrasts greatly with Superman's godlike fights with powerful alien beings. In the face of Superman's powers and the knowledge that there are much greater threats out there, Bruce Wayne has to come to terms with feelings of fear and vulnerability, as Zack Snyder recently revealed.

"We want to assume that Batman has reached this point in his life and career as a superhero, and Superman represents a sort of philosophical change. He is a paradigm shift for Batman: 'I've been fighting criminals all my life, trying to find justice, and now I am confronted with a concept that is transcendent to me.' In the face of Superman, a man robbing a bank doesn't matter."

This background may well be fleshed out in Suicide Squad, as it is rumoured to be revealed that for all his heroism, the US government don't actually appreciate Batman's efforts. Instead, they see him as a menace, a force they cannot control. But thanks to Bruce Wayne keeping a low profile, Batman is considered something of a bogeyman, never seen in the light of day and eluding the government's attempts at interference.

So what's the best way to take down a threat that hides in the shadows? Well, by hiring a squad of seriously shadowy individuals of course! Enter the Suicide Squad: criminals with a vendetta against Batman thanks to him being a serious thorn in their side for years.
