Naked And Not Famous

When Latinos do appear in films, it is usually naked or non-speaking roles, a new study shows.

The University of Southern California’s Annenberg School analyzed the top 100 highest grossing movies of 2013 and these were some of their findings

  • Latinos held only 4.9% of all speaking roles in films
  • 37% of scantily clad or naked women in film are Latinas, making them the most objectified ethnic group on screen
  • Latino men had to wear “tight, alluring or revealing” clothing in 16.5% of their roles, also making them the most objectified ethnic group among male actors
  • The study found no significant changes since 2007 in the number of non-white actors in major Hollywood films

Actor Esai Morales, famous for his role in 1987’s “La Bamba”,  told the NY Daily News that part of the problem is that “the minute you have a Nunez or a Vazquez as the lead, people wonder if it’s a foreign language film with subtitles. That worries people.”
